Average Tennis Serve Speed by Playing Level

There is no single reliable average tennis serve speed for every player. Studies use different groups and methods, including maximum ball velocity during controlled power-serve tests, average speed across several successful maximum-effort serves and match-level overall serve-speed data.

The most useful answer is therefore a set of evidence-based reference points. In a controlled study of 32 adult men, the group mean for maximum ball velocity was 107.2km/h for recreational beginners, 148.8km/h for good club players and 169.4km/h for national-level players. Each participant performed 15 power serves, so these results represent controlled maximum-velocity measurements rather than ordinary match averages.

These results overlap. A powerful recreational server can exceed the mean of a competitive sample, while a strong match player may serve more slowly and still hold effectively through placement, spin and variation.

What Is a Typical Serve Speed for Each Playing Level?

Beginner and Recreational Players

The available controlled studies provide male recreational reference values of roughly 107km/h and 115km/h, or about 67mph and 71mph. However, these numbers were produced using different testing methods. The first was a maximum-velocity measurement during 15 power serves, while the second was based on five successful maximum-effort serves with an unmodified racket.

The samples were also relatively small and did not represent every age, sex, body type or definition of a beginner. A new player should therefore not treat 110km/h as a pass-or-fail target.

Club and Intermediate Players

The good-club and collegiate groups produced values close to 147–149km/h, approximately 91–92mph. The similarity is useful as a reference, but it is not a direct replication because the studies used different players and testing protocols.

Club players also differ greatly in how they serve during matches. Advanced and National-Level Players

The national-level adult men in the Girard study recorded a group mean maximum ball velocity of 169.4km/h, about 105mph. An elite male junior group in another study averaged 156.5km/h, about 97mph, across five successful maximum-effort serves with the unmodified test racket.

Age, physical development, serving task, equipment and whether the statistic is a mean or maximum measurement can move the number substantially. Advanced serving is better assessed through pace, location, spin, first-serve percentage and the quality of the next ball rather than speed alone.

Professional Players

A study of 15 five-set men’s matches at Wimbledon found an overall serve-speed mean of 177.0km/h in the first set and 176.1km/h in the fifth. That is about 110mph and 109mph respectively.

The study included 30 male professionals playing on grass and found no significant decline in serve speed between the first and fifth sets. This suggests that the players maintained their overall serving pace despite matches lasting more than three hours on average.

Professional first serves can be considerably faster than an overall match serve-speed mean, while second serves are normally hit with more margin and spin. A single personal-best serve is therefore not directly comparable with the professional values reported in this study.

Why Serve-Speed Averages Vary So Much

Mean Speed Is Not Maximum Speed

A test can report the mean of several successful serves, the group mean for each player’s maximum result, the fastest serve in a series or overall match serve-speed data. These measurements can produce noticeably different results even when they involve players of a similar level.

Before comparing two numbers, check whether both describe the same statistic. Personal-best speed is useful for monitoring peak output, while average speed across a repeatable target drill gives a better indication of sustainable pace.

First and Second Serves Have Different Jobs

The first serve normally allows more risk. The second serve must clear the net and land in the service box reliably enough to avoid double faults, so players commonly exchange some ball speed for spin and margin.

Many players use a kick serve to create the net clearance and downward ball movement needed on a dependable second serve.

Measurement Protocol Matters

Radar position, testing environment, the number of attempts and the definition of a successful serve differed among the studies. These differences limit direct comparisons between their results.

A radar positioned behind the server during a controlled indoor test is not automatically comparable with tournament tracking equipment. Results can also differ depending on whether the player serves only from the deuce court, aims at a defined target or receives unlimited attempts.

For a useful personal baseline, use the same device, location and serving task each time. Record enough legal serves to calculate an average rather than keeping only the fastest reading.

Physical and Technical Factors Matter

Serve speed is influenced by the coordinated contribution of the legs, trunk, shoulder, arm and racket. It is therefore a product of the complete movement rather than one isolated body part.

A study of elite players at all four 2008 Grand Slam tournaments found an association between body height and serve speed. However, height accounted for only part of the variation in fastest, first and second-serve speeds. It does not determine how fast or effectively someone will serve.

Can Serve Speed Be Averaged by Age or Gender?

Age and gender labels do not produce trustworthy universal averages by themselves. Junior samples can differ in physical maturity, training volume and competitive level, while adult samples may include anything from first-time recreational players to touring professionals.

In a study of elite and club players aged 11–14, each participant completed eight successful serves. The researchers used each player’s fastest successful serve for the analysis.

The resulting group means were:

  • Elite boys: 135.6km/h
  • Elite girls: 149.3km/h
  • Club boys: 118.8km/h
  • Club girls: 125.4km/h

The female players in both groups were older on average. The researchers specifically noted that this age difference could help explain why the girls recorded higher figures. It would therefore be incorrect to turn these four values into general boy-versus-girl averages.

The same caution applies to adult comparisons. A useful benchmark should match the player’s competitive level, age range and measurement method as closely as possible rather than relying on a broad demographic label.

How to Measure Your Average Serve Speed

Use a radar gun or a validated video-based tool that reports ball speed. Position and configure it consistently according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

For a practical personal test:

  1. Warm up fully before recording serves.
  2. Choose one task, such as flat first serves from the deuce court to a defined target area.
  3. Record at least eight to ten legal serves rather than only successful-looking attempts.
  4. Note every valid reading and calculate the mean.
  5. Record the fastest legal serve separately.
  6. Repeat the same protocol on another day before drawing a conclusion.

This gives you two useful numbers: repeatable average speed and peak speed. Also track how many serves land in the intended area. Pace without a reasonable success rate is not a complete performance measure.

Yes. A 100mph serve equals about 161km/h and represents considerable pace for a recreational or club player.

If 100mph is your personal best, remember that it is not directly comparable with a study reporting an average across several serves or a group mean for maximum ball velocity. Placement, spin and how often the serve lands in remain important.

Is a 70mph serve good for a beginner?

A 70mph serve is about 113km/h, which is close to the controlled-study values reported for two recreational male samples. It can be a useful reference point, but beginners should prioritize a repeatable legal motion and control instead of treating that number as a requirement.

How fast do professional tennis players serve on average?

There is no single tour-wide average. In one sample of five-set men’s Wimbledon matches, overall serve speed was about 177km/h in the first set and 176km/h in the fifth.

Those figures should not be confused with average first-serve speed or a player’s fastest recorded serve.

Should only legal serves be measured?

For a practical performance benchmark, record serves that land in the chosen service box and state that rule in your notes. You can track all attempts separately to show how often the faster motion remains accurate.

Is serve speed the best measure of serving ability?

No. Speed is only one component. Placement, spin, disguise, first-serve percentage, second-serve reliability and the server’s ability to control the next shot all affect how well a serve performs in a match.
