The tennis string tension calculator on this page estimates a practical starting range from your playing level, swing, string type, gauge, racket head size, string pattern, performance goal, and arm sensitivity. It returns a narrow range rather than pretending one exact number will suit every racket and player.

Use the result as a discussion point with your stringer. The calculator does not know the permitted tension range for your exact racket, the stiffness of a specific string, the condition of the frame, or how a particular machine and stringer affect the finished stringbed. The manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model always take priority.

The recommended window is 4lb wide, with the midpoint between the low and high figures. This degree of precision is for controlled experimentation, not a claim that the calculated midpoint is objectively perfect.

How to Use the Calculator

1. Select your playing level

Choose Beginner, Recreational, Intermediate, Advanced, or Competitive. Level receives only modest weight because a label cannot capture technique, swing speed, or physical comfort by itself.

Use the category that reflects your current match and rally ability, not the level you hope to reach soon.

2. Describe your swing

Choose a slow or compact, medium, or fast and full swing. This input helps separate two players at the same level who create very different racket-head speed.

A compact swing generally points toward easier depth, while a fast swing can support a firmer response. The calculator still considers string material and racket construction before producing a result.

3. Choose the string setup

Select the category that matches the complete stringbed:

  • polyester
  • soft polyester
  • synthetic gut
  • multifilament
  • natural gut
  • polyester plus a softer string hybrid

Do not choose “soft polyester” simply because a product uses comfort-focused marketing. Confirm how the exact string is constructed and how it compares with other polyester strings. The Tennis String Finder can help if the material choice is not settled.

4. Select the gauge

The tool groups gauges as 1.20mm or thinner, 1.21–1.27mm, and 1.28mm or thicker. Enter the actual diameter when the package supplies it rather than relying only on gauge labels such as 16 or 17, which are not perfectly standardized across brands.

Gauge makes a small adjustment. It does not override the frame range or turn a durable string into a comfortable one.

5. Enter the racket head size

Choose under 98sq in, 98–100sq in, 101–105sq in, or 106sq in and larger. Use the specification for the exact racket rather than estimating from its appearance.

Larger heads generally use longer string segments and can produce a different effective stringbed from smaller heads. This is a supporting factor, not a universal tension formula.

6. Select the string pattern

The calculator includes very open 16×15, open 16×18 or 16×19, moderate 16×20, and dense 18×20 patterns. Pick the pattern printed on or published for the exact frame.

Pattern count alone cannot describe spacing. Two 16×19 rackets can distribute their strings differently, so the calculator keeps this adjustment limited.

7. Choose your main goal

Select power, comfort, a balanced response, spin and pocketing, or a firmer control-oriented response. Choose one priority even if several matter.

The goal changes the requested response, not the laws of impact. For example, selecting spin does not guarantee more revolutions, because spin also depends on technique, string movement, friction, pattern, and impact conditions.

8. Answer the arm-sensitivity question honestly

Choose no sensitivity, previous or occasional sensitivity, or current discomfort. The tool reduces its estimate and adds a caution when sensitivity is reported.

That adjustment is not medical advice and does not make a firm string safe for every person. Current pain is a reason to stop painful play and seek appropriate professional assessment, not to rely on a calculator.

9. Add your current tension if known

This optional field should be the machine reference tension used for a recent string job, not a phone-app reading taken weeks later. Select pounds or kilograms correctly.

The comparison can show whether the estimate is above, below, or near your previous number. It cannot determine how much tension the installed stringbed has lost.

An output at the edge of a tool guardrail deserves extra scrutiny. For example, a 40lb polyester estimate is below the broad 44–54lb first-job guidance above. Use it only when the exact frame and string permit it and an experienced stringer agrees that the low reference makes sense.

Likewise, the tool’s 62lb upper boundary is not permission to string any racket at 62lb. If the exact frame stops at 55lb, 55lb is the maximum relevant figure.

How the Estimate Is Built

The calculator starts from a neutral editorial baseline and makes modest adjustments. String construction and desired response have more influence than secondary details.

These directions are heuristics, not universal laws. A specific 18×20 racket can still work at a higher number than a particular 16×19 racket, and two strings sold under the same broad category can have different laboratory stiffness.

What the Result Does and Does Not Mean

It is a machine reference range

The output is the number requested during installation. It is not the tension that will remain in every individual string after knots, clamp movement, friction, settling, and play.

It is a starting experiment

Use the midpoint for the first job when it is inside the exact frame and string guidance. Record the result and change by about 2lb or 1kg on the next job if a consistent adjustment is needed.

It is not a safety certification

It does not choose the string for you

It does not measure current stringbed tension

The optional current-tension field compares reference settings. It does not convert a sound-frequency reading or dynamic-tension measurement into the original machine number.

Worked Calculator Examples

These examples show how to interpret an output without treating it as a prescription. The actual figure depends on the entries selected in the live tool.

Example 1: Recreational player using multifilament

A recreational player with a compact swing, 100sq in 16×19 racket, medium gauge, comfort goal, and previous sensitivity may receive a lower estimate than another multifilament user seeking a firm response.

Before accepting it, the player should check the frame range and the string manufacturer’s guidance. If the last comfortable setup is known, that history matters more than a generic category.

Example 2: Advanced player using polyester

An advanced player with a fast swing, 98sq in 18×20 racket, medium-gauge polyester, and firm response goal may receive a higher polyester estimate. It should still remain inside both the tool’s polyester guardrails and the exact frame’s limits.

The result does not prove that full polyester is the right material for that player. It assumes the user has already made that decision.

Example 3: Hybrid with different main and cross strings

The calculator returns one starting window for the hybrid category. It cannot identify the exact polyester and soft string, which component is in the mains, or whether their manufacturers suggest a tension difference.

Treat the result as the center of a conversation with a stringer. Record main and cross tensions separately on the finished job.

Why the Same Calculator Result Can Play Differently

  • a constant-pull and a lockout machine can produce different completed stringbeds at the same displayed number
  • clamp condition and drawback affect retained tension
  • string stiffness varies within every material category
  • head shape and actual string spacing are more detailed than the input groups
  • pre-stretching or unusual installation methods change the result
  • temperature and time since stringing affect string behavior
  • manufacturing tolerances mean two nominally identical frames are not always perfectly matched

For useful comparisons, keep the racket, string, gauge, stringer, and machine consistent. Change one setting at a time.

When to Recalculate

Use the calculator again when changing string family, gauge, racket head size, pattern, or main performance goal. Do not recalculate simply because an old stringbed has lost tension. That setup may need replacement rather than a new target number.
