A vibration dampener is a small accessory that is placed on the strings of a tennis racket, usually near the bottom of the string bed. Its main purpose is to reduce the vibrations produced when the ball makes contact with the strings, providing a softer and more comfortable feel at impact.

Installing a vibration dampener on a tennis racket is quite simple.
For button-style dampeners:
Push the dampener until it reaches the center of one of the main strings, then bend it so it passes through to the other side. After that, slide it upward until it meets the first cross string. It should be positioned as shown in the image below.

Types of Vibration Dampeners
- Small discs or button-style dampeners that fit between two strings.
- Longer dampeners that cover more strings and provide greater vibration absorption.
Benefits of Using a Vibration Dampener in Tennis
- Reduced vibrations – Helps absorb part of the vibrations transmitted to the hand.
- Less noise – Changes the sound of impact, making it less “metallic.”
- Improved comfort – May help reduce strain on the arm and wrist, especially for players with conditions such as tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis).
Myths vs Reality
- A vibration dampener does not improve performance or power. Its main role is to change the feel and sound of the shot.
- It does not necessarily prevent injuries, but it can make playing more comfortable for some players.
