US Open Juniors Draw Eligibility and Past Champions

The US Open Junior Championships are the tournament’s boys’ and girls’ events for leading players on the international junior circuit. They are played at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center during the second week of the senior US Open, but they have separate draws, eligibility rules and champions.

In 2026, junior qualifying begins on September 3 and the main tournament runs from September 6 through September 12. Because the event had not started as of September 1, this guide lists 2025 as the latest completed edition and does not name unfinished 2026 champions.

The singles main draws use single elimination. A player who loses is out of that competition, although a singles player may still remain in the doubles draw.

The junior event is one part of the wider championship. The complete US Open tennis guide explains the senior draws, venue, courts and other competitions without confusing them with the junior tournament.

When and Where Are the US Open Juniors Played?

Junior matches take place on the outdoor hard courts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York. They are normally scheduled during the senior tournament’s second week, when fewer senior matches leave more court time available for the junior draws.

For 2026, the ITF event record gives September 3 as the first day of singles qualifying and September 6 as the first day of the singles main draw. The championship dates are September 6 through September 12, with the official US Open schedule placing junior doubles from September 7 through September 12.

Those dates are the latest confirmed 2026 information, not a permanent calendar. Weather, unfinished matches and tournament decisions can change an individual day’s order of play, so spectators should check the current schedule before traveling.

How the US Open Junior Draw Works

Both boys’ and girls’ singles have 64-player main draws. Six consecutive wins produce a champion because each round halves the field from 64 to 32, 16, eight, four, two and finally one.

The 32-player qualifying draws are also single elimination. Two wins reduce each qualifying field to eight successful players, although the final composition of a Grand Slam junior main draw is governed by the official acceptance and draw procedures.

The boys’ and girls’ doubles draws each contain 32 teams. Five wins are required for a title, and a doubles loss has no effect on a player’s place in singles.

Draw rounds, sets and games are different parts of tournament structure. The guide to rounds, sets and tennis draws shows why a six-round singles draw does not mean a match contains six sets.

Seeds and Draw Placement

Seeds are selected to keep the highest-rated entrants from meeting in the opening rounds. Seeding does not award a bye in a full 64-player draw, guarantee an easier opponent or protect a player from an upset.

The draw also identifies qualifiers and wild cards. Those labels describe how a player entered the field, not a different scoring system or a lower-status match once main-draw play begins.

Who Is Eligible to Play?

The ITF World Tennis Tour Juniors is for players aged 18 and under. Players can generally compete in ITF junior events from their 13th birthday through the end of the calendar year in which they turn 18, subject to the current age-eligibility and participation rules.

Age eligibility alone does not provide a US Open place. A player also needs the required World Tennis Tour Zone membership, commonly known through the IPIN system, and must satisfy the ITF’s mandatory player-education requirements before entering applicable events.

Younger junior players face limits on how many international tournaments they may play. Those limits and other regulations can change, so a player, parent or coach should use the rules in force for that season rather than relying on a previous year’s entry process.

How Do Juniors Enter the US Open?

The US Open juniors are not a public sign-up tournament. Players enter through the international junior system, and the final field is built from direct acceptances, qualifiers and wild cards under Grand Slam and ITF regulations.

Direct Acceptance

Most main-draw places are determined through the applicable junior acceptance criteria. ITF junior ranking is central, but the official acceptance list is what confirms whether a player is in the main draw, qualifying field or alternate list.

Rankings reward results across eligible junior tournaments rather than reputation alone. The explanation of how junior tennis rankings work covers ranking points, combined rankings and why points can expire.

Qualifying

Players accepted into the 32-player singles qualifying draw compete for the remaining main-draw positions. In 2026, qualifying is scheduled to begin on September 3, three days before the main draw starts.

A qualifying place is still earned through the formal entry and acceptance process. A junior cannot arrive at the venue, win an informal trial and enter the Grand Slam draw.

Wild Cards

The USTA can award wild cards under the tournament’s regulations. These places may create opportunities for leading American juniors or other selected players whose ranking would not otherwise provide entry.

A wild card is an invitation into a specified draw. It does not provide a seeded position, a first-round win or an automatic place in a future professional US Open.

Junior US Open Versus the Senior US Open

The junior and senior tournaments share a venue and championship name, but they are separate competitions. Junior results count within the junior system, while senior main-draw entry depends on the professional Grand Slam entry rules, rankings, qualifying and wild cards.

Winning the junior title does not automatically place a player in the next senior US Open. It is an important achievement and a useful development step, but the route to a professional career still requires progress through higher levels, ranking events and tour competition.

Some leading teenagers compete in junior and professional events during the same stage of their careers, provided they are eligible and accepted. The broader guide to becoming a professional tennis player explains why there is no single promotion point from junior tennis to the pro tours.

Latest Completed US Open Junior Singles Champions

The table below lists the five latest completed editions through 2025. It deliberately excludes 2026 because that year’s junior tournament had not begun as of September 1, 2026.

YearBoys’ singles championGirls’ singles champion
2025Ivan IvanovJeline Vandromme
2024Rafael JodarMika Stojsavljevic
2023Joao FonsecaKatherine Hui
2022Martin LandaluceAlexandra Eala
2021Daniel RinconRobin Montgomery

Ivanov defeated Alexander Vasilev 7-5, 6-3 in the all-Bulgarian 2025 boys’ final. Vandromme beat qualifier Lea Nilsson 7-6(2), 6-2 to win the 2025 girls’ title.

There was no US Open junior tournament in 2020. Historical lists should therefore not treat 2020 as a missing champion whose name is still to be added.

Notable Former Junior Champions

A US Open junior title can identify an exceptional prospect, but later professional outcomes vary widely. Andy Roddick won the boys’ title in 2000, Andy Murray won in 2004 and Lindsay Davenport won the girls’ title in 1992 before each later became a senior Grand Slam champion.

Other notable junior champions include Jennifer Capriati, Victoria Azarenka, Marion Bartoli and Taylor Fritz. Their careers show the level of talent that reaches this event, not a guarantee that every junior champion will become a top professional.

Junior draws are also valuable because future stars may lose before the final. Looking only at the champion can miss players who develop later or make a faster transition to the senior tour.

How to Watch the US Open Juniors in Person

Junior matches are usually played on the field courts, so spectators can often watch from much closer than they can in the largest stadiums. Court assignments can change, and admission depends on the ticket and access rules for that session.

Check the official order of play on the day you attend. The guide to how the US Open order of play is made explains why a match time is an estimate and why court assignments may move after delays.

Arriving early creates more choice on unreserved courts. It also gives you time to pass security and locate a match before warm-up, especially when several junior singles and doubles rounds are scheduled at once.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2026 boys’ and girls’ singles main draws each contain 64 players. Each singles qualifying draw contains 32 players.

How many matches does a junior singles champion play?

A main-draw champion wins six matches in a 64-player single-elimination draw. A player who first comes through qualifying must also win the required qualifying matches.

Do junior champions automatically enter the senior US Open?

Who are the latest completed US Open junior champions?

Ivan Ivanov and Jeline Vandromme won the boys’ and girls’ singles titles in 2025. They remain the latest completed champions until the 2026 junior finals are played.

When are the 2026 US Open juniors?

Junior singles qualifying is scheduled to begin September 3, and the main championship runs September 6 through September 12. Annual dates, draws and daily court assignments should be rechecked because the tournament can revise its schedule.
